Add and follow a future starter

A future starter is someone who has been added for onboarding but has not yet joined the active workforce. Keeping this as a separate stage lets HR prepare the person's journey without filling the Directory and day-to-day planning views with people who have not started.

Add a future starter

  1. Open People, then Journeys.
  2. Find Future starters and select Add future starter.
  3. Add the person's name, employing country, organisation details and planned first working day.
  4. Select Add future starter.

The person is now available to authorised HR users in Future starters and can be selected when an onboarding journey is started. They do not yet appear in the ordinary Directory, workforce insights or operational planning.

Start onboarding

  1. Select Start journey on a published onboarding journey.
  2. Choose Future starters when selecting the person.
  3. Select the future starter. Their planned first working day is suggested for the journey, and you can review it before starting.
  4. Review the journey and select Start journey.

You can then prepare preboarding access and follow the same onboarding tasks, messages and document requests described in Create and run an employee journey.

Offboarding can be started only for a current employee. This prevents a future starter from being placed in the wrong process by mistake.

Activate the employee

Activate the future starter when they should become part of the active workforce, normally on their first working day.

  1. Open People, then Journeys.
  2. Find the person under Future starters.
  3. Select Activate and review the first working day.
  4. Confirm Activate employee.

The same person record, onboarding journey, tasks and history continue after activation. Markular does not create a second person. The employee can now appear in the Directory and other ordinary workforce views according to their access and organisation setup.

If the person used preboarding access, give them managed Markular access from their active People profile before moving the journey. Return to the onboarding journey and choose Move to Markular access. Review the exact work login, sign-in method and access role, then confirm. Markular keeps the same person, journey, tasks and history, stops the private preboarding credentials and does not send a second welcome. If the action is unavailable, the private identity may not be verified or the managed work identity and minimum access are not ready.

If the person will not start

Select Withdraw from the future starter's actions and confirm the change. The person remains outside the active workforce, cannot be activated by mistake, and any existing preboarding invitation or session can no longer be used. Retained history remains available to authorised HR users.

Do not delete the person merely because an offer was withdrawn. Withdrawal keeps the necessary process history while preventing further access and ordinary workforce use.
