Read the org chart

The org chart gives you a visual picture of your reporting structure: who reports to whom, which positions are filled or vacant, and how teams and departments fit together. You can explore one reporting line at a time, open the full hierarchy, or browse by department.

The org chart is for viewing only. You explore and filter the structure here, but you make changes to positions on the Positions page. See Manage positions when you need to add or edit a position.

Before you start

  • You need the View personnel permission to open the org chart.
  • The chart only shows countries and reporting lines available through your Country Access.
  • The hierarchy comes from positions and their reporting relationships. A person appears in a position when they are assigned as its current holder.

Open and filter the org chart

  1. In People, open Org Chart.
  2. Check the Country filter. The chart starts with your default country when one is available. You can select other accessible countries or choose all countries available to you.
  3. Narrow the result with Department, Contract Type, or Gender. Active filters appear below the filter bar and can be removed individually.
  4. Search by name or email to find a person. The result keeps the reporting context needed to show where each match belongs.
  5. Use Show vacant positions to include or hide positions without a current holder.
  6. Use Show inactive people when you need inactive position holders included in the result.
  7. Choose Clear all to return to your default scope and remove the other filters.

Choose how to explore the organisation

The controls above the result let you organise the same available data in different ways.

People: Explore

Explore focuses on one person or vacant position at a time. Markular may select this view automatically for large or wide organisations because names and reporting lines remain easier to read.

  • The reporting line above the focused card shows the available manager chain. Select a manager to move the focus up the organisation.
  • The focused card shows the number of direct reports and the total number of reports below that position.
  • Direct reports appear below the focused card. Select a person's card to open their quick view. If they have reports, use the report-count action to make that person the new focus.
  • The quick view shows available contact and organisation details and includes View full profile.
  • Use Home to return to the top of the available organisation.
  • Use Jump to me to clear the other filters, return to your default country, and focus on your own position.
  • When a person has many direct reports, use Filter direct reports to narrow that list without changing the main org-chart filters.

People: Full chart

Full chart displays the available hierarchy as a connected canvas.

  • Read the chart from top to bottom. Each card is a position, and each connecting line points from a parent position to a position reporting to it.
  • Drag the chart background to pan around the hierarchy.
  • Use the zoom buttons, Fit to screen, or Reset zoom to adjust the canvas.
  • Use Expand All and Collapse All for the complete result, or expand and collapse individual branches from their cards.
  • If the hierarchy becomes too wide to read when fitted to the screen, Markular recommends opening Explore.

Departments

Choose Departments under Organize by to browse the same result by department instead of reporting line.

  1. Departments are grouped by business unit and show the number of visible positions.
  2. Select a department to see its people and positions.
  3. Use Filter people when a department has a long list.
  4. Select a person or position to continue in People and Explore their reporting line.

Understand context and restricted reporting lines

Filters can match a person below a manager who does not match the same filter. Markular keeps the necessary manager cards as reporting context so the result still makes sense. The legend distinguishes matches from context.

A lock or an access-limited reporting-line message means part of the manager chain is outside your Country Access. The chart does not reveal the hidden person or position. Vacant positions hidden between two visible positions can also be summarized as hidden levels so the reporting relationship is not misleading.

Inactive people are hidden by default. Vacant positions are shown by default, but both settings can be changed from the filter bar.

If the chart looks incomplete

  • Check Country, the active filter chips, Show vacant positions, and Show inactive people.
  • Use Clear all to return to your default scope.
  • If a position is missing or reports to the wrong place, update it on the Positions page.
  • If a reporting line stops at an access-limited marker, ask an administrator to review your Country Access only when you need access for your work.
