Onboard a new person
This tutorial takes a new person from nothing to ready to work. It applies whether the person is one of your own employees or crew hired through an agency, because in Markular both are set up the same way.
What you will end up with: a person who is in the directory, is marked as the right kind of personnel, holds a position, and has their documents on file, ready to be scheduled and to register hours where your organisation uses those modules.
Time: about 10 minutes.
:::info Organisations with an external HR system Create the person and assign their position in your HR system. After synchronization, continue the Markular-specific onboarding here by checking competencies, attaching documents and assigning access. See Work with personnel managed by an external HR system. :::
1. Add the person
Create the person and record their basic details, including how they are engaged, for example a direct employee or agency-hired crew. This is what keeps your directory, filters, and reports able to tell the two apart.
See Add a new person.
2. Give them a position
Assign the position they will hold. The position is the single most important choice, because it decides which competencies they are expected to have and lets the schedule ask for the role before a name is attached.
See How positions and the org structure work.
3. Check their competency requirements
Once the position is set, check which competencies and certificates the person is expected to hold, and whether they already have them. This is what stops someone being scheduled into a role they are not qualified for.
4. Add their documents
Attach the documents the person needs on file, such as certificates and issued documents like a passport or seaman's book, so nothing is missing when they mobilise.
5. Confirm what they can do in Markular
The person is now set up. What they can do next depends on which modules your organisation has:
- If you use Planner, they can be scheduled onto rotations for their position.
- If you use Timekeeper, they can register their worked hours.
- If they will also help manage People, give them the right permission level. See the People permissions reference.
